(Spatial Coordination)
We were delighted to receive the commission to design a new multi-function ‘hub’ for the Veterans Garage, a military and emergency service support charity and organisation.
The proposals included for the refurbishment and conversion of the Grade II Listed former Terminal building at the City Airport which dates back to 1930, forming an integral part of the original airport, which became the first municipal airfield in the UK to be licensed by the Air Ministry.
The iconic control tower and original hangar building are also Grade II Listed buildings and remain in operation today, so the proposed extension to the former terminal building was very deliberately contemporary to allow a ‘line of time’ to be read through the external appearance and material use.
The design provides a social hub and counselling suites, alongside a series of multi-use spaces, the largest of which is envisaged for housing exhibitions, to attract enthusiasts of aviation, car, and motorbikes.
We our honoured to be involved in this development and our architectural work was donated to the charity, which supports over 2,000 veterans and emergency service personnel across the year, and partners with the Royal British Legion Bikers, Walking with the Wounded, NHS Military Veterans Service, Help For Heroes and Combat Stress.
