We were tasked with designing a 150-bedroom 3* hotel and restaurant located within the ‘gateway’ of Keele University, a complex site with a history of planning refusal and a dismissed appeal.
We offered a proposal with a building appropriately sited within the development plot, and by careful design of the building form and a change in material palette, colour and detailing, we ensured that the external appearance created a synergetic relationship with the surrounding green belt context.
The proposal was acknowledged as creating a high-quality place with a strong identity that positively enhanced the overall character and image of the main entrance to the University estate.
Throughout the design stages, including a thorough examination and Design Review by Urban Vision, our proposals were consistently supported. Keele Parish Council praised the design concept and architecture, and the proposal was unanimously approved by Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council Planning Authority.
